Kasauli - A 19th Century hill station (5889 feet) in Himachal Pradesh India, Located 77 km from Shimla, 65 km from Chandigarh and 50 km from Panchkula, it still retains the old world charms and is a throwback to the past. It was the summer capital of the British Army, post India's independence. At a height of 1951 mtrs. Kasauli overlooks the cities of Chandigarh, Ropar, Panchkula, Ludhiana and a few others, depending on which side of Kasauli are you in.
The main Kasauli is divided into portions, Upper Mall & Lower Mall areas. These are ideal for long walks. A lot of people just go up to Kasauli from nearby cities, as Chandigarh, for this long walk and fresh Pine & Oak Wood brushed air, which is quite medicinal in nature, specially for people with respiratory problems. This is one of the reason, why the TB Sanatorium was built by the British, here in Kasauli. TheCentral Research Institute, as its today know as was earlier The Pateur Institute which was founded in 1900 by Sir David Semple. Here the first anti-rabies vaccination was produced. The Institute also treats those suffering from bites, as an everyday feature.
Kasauli still has most of the colonial type cottages, which the British built, to create an English type surrounding. We have been able to convince a few of these Cottage owners to rent it to us, for our guests.
Ruskin Bond - the popular author of children's literature, Andy Mulligan - Irish rugby star, were both born in Kasauli. Famous author Khushwant Singh comes to write and relax in his ancestral home in Kasauli. Rahul Bose an actor & rugby player from Mumbai comes to holiday to his house in Kasauli.
When India got its Independence, most of the British left India. Major Robert & Mary Hotz remained and were running the Alasia Hotel. They had a very beautiful daughter Sandra and in early 1960s, Sir David Lean, the famous British film director of "Lawrence of Arabia", "Dr.Zhivago" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" while filming in Kasauli, met Sandra and fell in love with each other, which led to their marriage.
